White House Considers Arming Ukraine to Repel Russia

Several members of President Trump’s cabinet have floated the idea of arming Ukrainian rebels with American arms in order to repel Russia’s presence in the former Soviet country. Former President Barack Obama’s refusal to arm the Ukrainian rebels gave Russia a stronger position in Ukraine, and was heavily criticized by both sides for not taking action.

The move would also counter Russia’s growing military presence in the region which has threatened NATO countries such as Belarus and Estonia. Kurt Volker, a former NATO envoy and current special representative to Ukraine, backed the move to arm Ukraine, “Defensive weapons, ones that would allow Ukraine to defend itself, and to take out tanks for example, would actually help.” America’s relations with Russia have already strained, so might as well try to counter their military presence by arming those threatened by the Kremlin.
