Qatar purchased seven Italian warships at a cost of $6 billion on Wednesday in an act of defiance against the Saudi-led blockade. The purchase of warships by the Qatari Kingdom indicates that the economic and diplomatic annexation of the Qatar by four Arab nations is not relenting anytime soon.
Earlier this week, Qatar reached out to international organizations including the International Civil Aviation Organization and World Trade Organization in a plea to end trade and air embargoes initiated by Saudi Arabia. The United States is currently divided between supporting Qatar and the Saudi-led bloc.
President Trump has come out in favor of Saudi Arabia’s demands, while Secretary of State Rex Tillerson backed the Qatari nation and has recently appointed General Anthony Zinni as a special representative to the Persian Gulf.
