500 To Stand Trial for 2016’s Turkey Coup

After the failed coup last summer in Turkey, many were arrested by police for their attempted overthrow of president Erdogan.

On Tuesday, 500 people including army generals and pilots were escorted into a courtroom in Ankara accused of commanding the coup from an airbase in the capital city. Many protesters surrounded the entrance to the courtroom jeering at the accused for killing relatives and demanded that the death penalty be used.

If convicted, the suspects risk life terms in prison for crimes that include violating the constitution, attempted assassination of the president, trying to abolish the republic and seizing military headquarters.
