Leo Varadkar will be the next prime minister of Ireland after he was voted leader of the country’s main governing party. Varadkar is the son of an Indian immigrant and came out as gay in 2015 after Ireland passed a gay marriage referendum. He will also be the country’s youngest ever leader, and the first from an ethnic minority background.
“It is a sign of how much Ireland has changed and moved on that no one really cares if he is gay here,” said Brian Finnegan, the editor of Gay Community News in Dublin. Ireland has set the bar pretty high in terms of gay rights and one that other Western countries need to follow.
