During the campaign, President Trump said he would “Make America Great Again” but this plan does not include the once great railroads of America.
The new budget proposed by Trump would cut Amtrak’s budget by $630m, which would eliminate the service altogether in over 220 cities and in 23 states. These states are almost entirely in the middle of the country, and who voted for Trump. However, the House appropriations committee released a 2018 funding bill that included $1.4 billion for Amtrak, which was the same amount that Trump requested for initial construction of his border wall with Mexico.
Even though the journeys are long, Amtrak is still an essential part to the American transportation system which has relied too heavily on highways and airplanes.
