In the early hours of Friday morning, three Republicans and all Democrats rejected the “skinny repeal” bill which effectively ended the Republicans chance of repealing Obamacare. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), recently diagnosed with brain cancer, cast the deciding vote and ended Trump’s hopes of passing healthcare legislation.
A recent Congressional Budget Office report suggested that the “skinny repeal” bill would have increased the number of uninsured by 15 million next year and increased premiums by roughly 20%. Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he was relieved to know that millions of people will be able to retain their health insurance after a hard fought week of debating.
On Tuesday, President Trump called McCain an “American hero” after returning to the Senate floor after his diagnosis, McCain lived up to this title against the wishes of his own party.
