According to sources close to the president, Trump is considering replacing Attorney General Jeff Sessions through a recess appointment if Sessions leaves the job or is fired. A recess appointment allows the president to fill the post with anyone of his choosing if the Senate goes on recess for a period of more than 10 days. However, many Republicans see Sessions as their representative in a largely dysfunctional White House administration with many advisers to the president having the same blood as Trump.
Trump could use a recess appointment to squash the special counsel led by Robert Mueller III into the Trump administration’s possible collusion with Russia, which is the Democrat’s main argument against a new appointment.
For the third day in a row, Trump attacked the attorney general on twitter, this time questioning Session’s appointment of acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe who Trump says has close ties to James Comey.
