Paul R. Shanley was one of the most notorious figures in the Catholic Church’s sex abuse scandal and was convicted of raping a Sunday school student in the early 1980’s. Shanley has been behind bars for 12 years, and will likely be released later this week.
He abused more than two dozen victims over several decades during his involvement with the “ministry for alienated youth” in Boston in the 1960’s and 70’s. An attorney for one of Shanley’s alleged victims, said he was outraged by the doctors who examined Shanley and found him not to be sexually dangerous.
“It’s a sad day for many victims. Father Stanley has ruined their lives from sexually abusing them…and feel the supervisors of Father Stanley got away with allowing him to do it,” said Mitchell Garabedian, who represented Shanley’s victims.
