At 12 years old, Deeqo Jibril immigrated to Boston with her family fleeing the civil war that tore her home country Somalia in two. Jibril jumped from one temp agency to temp agency looking for jobs to make ends meet.
Today, she is a founder of an African mall in the Roxbury area home to six local businesses and an activist in her community inspiring other refugees and immigrants. Jibril is seeking to be the first Muslim elected to the Boston City Council, representing District 7.
She was recently endorsed by Unite Here Local 26, a labor union group that represents workers in the food service industry across MA.
