Officials Can’t Detain Immigrants Without Charges

A ruling which goes against the current Trump administration, states that state court officers don’t have the authority to detain people suspected of being in the U.S. illegally if that person is not facing criminal charges.

Trump has sought to deport people that have arrived to the U.S. illegally through any means necessary, including simple traffic violations.

The Supreme Judicial Court released a statement Monday which said that state law “provides no authority for MA court officers to arrest and hold an individual solely on the basis of a federal civil immigration detainer.” MA once again leading the resistance against the Trump administration.
