Polish Parliament Approves Law Curtailing Courts’ Independence

Poland’s Parliament gave final approval to a landmark measure on Saturday that would restructure the Supreme Court, putting it under effective control of the governing party. The far right wing conservative ruling party, Law and Justice (PiS), have sought to censor the rights of women, the press and the Constitution since coming to party in 2015. The legislation would force all Supreme Court justices to resign with the governing party’s justice minister then handpicking those allowed to remain and choosing replacements for the others. President of the European Council and former prime minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, spoke out against the legislation, “It is my conviction that they are a negation of European values and standards, and that they put our [the EU’s] reputation at risk.” This legislation undermines what the European Union stands for, and is just another example of the risk that far-right parties pose to the well-being of their citizens.
